Though details remained unclear Thursday afternoon, investigators reportedly are looking into a situation that came to light Thursday morning when it was learned a juror serving in Cherokee County General Sessions Court received a telephone call regarding a court case.

Circuit Court Judge Mark Hayes, who presided over the jury trial of Cameron Oneal Stevenson, 24, of Gaffney, said in court that he was advised of the situation Thursday morning after it was brought to the attention of a bailiff.

The judge subsequently relayed in court, and outside of the jury’s presence, that the juror claimed to have received a call Wednesday from someone identifying himself as the defendant in the case, though the judge did not go into detail about the alleged conversation.

“(The juror) reported and related the nature of the phone call and summarized the substance of the very brief telephone conversation,” the judge said in court.

The judge added that the juror, who was serving as an alternate juror in the case, did not feel the telephone conversation would affect her ability to be fair.

The judge said in court it was decided to allow the alternate juror to remain on the panel, though the juror was instructed not to discuss the situation with the other jurors.

Stevenson’s defense attorney stated in court that Stevenson denied making such a call.
