Shoe bandit strikes
The Gaffney Police Department is investigating the armed robbery of a West Floyd Baker Boulevard sportswear store by a bandit with very particular tastes in footwear.
According to a police report, a black male approximately 25 to 30 years old, about 6-feet, 1-inch tall, and weighing about 190 pounds, entered the SageSport store at 1535 W. Floyd Baker Boulevard at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday and spent about 30 minutes selecting shoes with a store clerk.
While being served, store clerks told police, the man kept calling someone on a cell phone and asking them what size shoes they wore. Clerks told police the man also received several calls from someone asking him if he was done yet.
When the man made several selections for purchase, one of the clerks took his shoes to the register and rang them up. The man then approached the counter and told the clerks, “I’m about to rob you.”
The man reportedly pushed two clerks behind the counter and pulled out what they believed to be a handgun and put it in their backs. The clerks told police the man kept them facing away from him while he grabbed about $400 to $500 from the cash drawer.
The man then had the clerk bag all of the shoes he had selected and made them go to the back of the store while he fled.
Police were given a description of all of the styles, colors and sizes of the shoes the man stole during the robbery. Nine pairs of shoes, including “Retro Jordan” sneakers, Nike Air Force One sneakers, and Nike Advantage sneakers, were among the stolen footwear.
No arrest had been reported as of Thursday afternoon.
The robber’s hair was in dreadlocks and he was wearing a black fitted ball cap, a black tshirt with a white t-shirt underneath, and blue jeans with MFG written on the back of one of the pant legs, according to a description that was provided to police.
