High school player dies
South Carolina officials say a high school football player has died after collapsing on the field during a preseason game.
The Herald of Rock Hill reported that Chester County Chief Deputy Coroner Tommy Williams said 18-year-old Brian Colvin showed seizurelike symptoms when he collapsed on the sidelines Friday night. The teen died later at a local hospital.
Colvin was a running back for Lewisville who was playing against Westminster Catawba Christian School during the Chester County Football Jamboree.
The 5-foot-9, 165-pound senior also ran track.
Shaw, Scruggs shine for USC
Backup quarterback Connor Shaw and reserve receiver Lamar Scruggs led the way at South Carolina's scrimmage.
Shaw completed 12 of 14 passes for 150 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown pass to Ace Sanders during Saturday's session at Williams-Brice Stadium. Starting passer Stephen Garcia completed 3 of 8 throws for 76 yards. Garcia connected with DeMario Bennett for a 31-yard TD.
Scruggs led the receivers with three catches for 73 yards in the Gamecocks second scrimmage of fall camp.
Bryce Sherman led the running backs with four carries for 16 yards, including a 9- yard touchdown run. Jarvis Giles and Marcus Lattimore had 15 yards each.
South Carolina opens the season Sept. 2 at home against Southern Miss.
Stewart practices with Panthers
Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart participated only in position drills and watched most of the team portion of Saturday morning's workout.
But for someone who almost never practices because of chronic pain in his left Achilles' tendon and heel, finally passing his physical and being taken off the physically unable to perform list was a significant accomplishment for Stewart.
