Blacksburg cut to the Chase in Friday’s 27-0 victory over McCormick in the Iron City Jamboree finale.

Senior running back and defensive back Chase Hames rushed for 114 yards on eight carries, scoring three touchdowns in a home season games. Hames scored on touchdown runs of 22- and 2- yards before taking a fumble return 88-yards for a defensive touchdown.

Hames finished off the Wildcats first offensive possession with a 22-yard run, diving in for the touchdown. He started the next series with a 32-yard run.

McCormick was penalized for a horsecollar tackle at the end of Hames’ run, moving the ball to the 17-yard line. Hames finished off the drive with a 2-yard run to give Blacksburg a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

Chase Hames’ third touchdown came after his brother, Nick, stripped the ball from the McCormick quarterback. Chase caught the ball in midair at the 12-yard line and sped down the sideline for the defensive touchdown.

“Chase loves the game of football. He goes hard on offense and defense. He just wore out tonight, but he’s a heck of a player,” Blacksburg head coach Mickey Moss said.

It was far from a one man show for Blacksburg, though, in one of their final tuneups before the regular season begins.

Chase Hames shared the running load with backs Lennal Dasher and Raymond Ellis. Ellis had a 28-yard run to set up his 13-yard touchdown run for the Wildcats’ final score with 1:04 left in the second quarter.

Blacksburg kept the ball mostly on the ground behind an offensive line which regularly opened holes for Dasher, Hames and Ellis. Defensively, Blacksburg forced two fumbles and shut down McCormick’s defense most of the night.

McCormick had a 70- yard touchdown called back on a penalty which occurred 30 yards behind the running back. Another McCormick drive stalled at the 13-yard line.

Moss was pleased with the physical toughness his players showed against McCormick.

“We played hard with a lot of effort on offense and defense. This is what we have been waiting to see,” Moss said. “We hope our players will continue to improve. We play Swansea this Friday at the Lexington County jamboree. Swansea has a good football team. We just need to keep on getting better.”
