The Boom is Back

New coach brings back fireworks display as part of pregame ceremony

There will be fireworks on and off the field at the new Reservation this season.

First-year Gaffney High football coach Dan Jones said the fireworks display will once again be a part of the Indians’ colorful pregame ceremony.

At Brumbach Stadium, Gaffney players entered the field to a raucous ovation and a fireworks display.

The display, however, was discontinued when the Indians moved to the new Reservation because of a South Carolina High School League rule that bars the igniting of fireworks on school property.

Bruce Hulion, the League’s Commissioner of Officials, said the rule was instituted years ago for safety reasons.

This year, the High School League raised the fine from $300 to $1,000.

Jones said the school is in compliance with the rule since the fireworks will be fired from a nearby business, not on school grounds.

Jones said he decided to bring the fireworks display back because of its popularity.

“I enjoyed them and the players and fans enjoyed them.”

Laurens and Marlboro County are among several high schools that use fireworks in their pregame football ceremonies.

Fans will get their first look at the new pregame ceremony on Friday. Aug. 27, against visiting Class 4A state champion Dorman.
