Mary Tate Kirby

Mary Tate Kirby, 84, of 109 Brittany Road, widow of Johnnie R. Kirby, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010, at her home.

Mrs. Kirby was born in Caroleen, N.C., and raised in Pacolet Mills. She was the daughter of the late Rev. W.T. and Dovie Sparks Tate. Mrs. Kirby was a 1947 graduate of the Spartanburg General Hospital School of Nursing, where she received her Registered Nursing degree. She was a Baptist by faith.

Surviving are two daughters, Janice K. Kelsey of Pickens and Debbie Ackerman of Clinton; two sons, Phil Kirby and David Christopher Kirby, both of Gaffney; eight grandchildren, Jimmy Kelsey, John Kelsey, Phillip Kirby, Adam Kirby, Jennifer Beverly, David Ackerman, Michael Ackerman and David Kirby; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two sons, Bill Kirby and Mike Kirby.

Services will be held Monday, Aug. 23, at 3 p.m. in Gray Funeral Home Chapel with interment in Pinelawn Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday from 2-3 p.m. at the funeral home.
