The robber then fled with an undisclosed sum of money to a gold Jeep Cherokee parked at the Town & Country Apartments, across Ellis Ferry Avenue from the bank, and drove towards Interstate 85.
"Officers arrived quickly and we were able to get a description out," Turner said.
The gold Jeep Cherokee was stopped by police on Interstate 85, at Mile Marker 8, in Cleveland County, N.C.
The suspect was identified in a police report as Howard Burton Means, 23, of Oak Street, Charlotte, N.C.
Following the traffic stop, Gaffney Police wrote in a report, Det. Lt. Ron Ramsey and Det. Sgt. Brian Blanton went to Cleveland County "where the subject confessed and the money was recovered."
Turner said Gaffney Police will be seeking the suspect's extradition to South Carolina.
No one was hurt during the robbery.
As of 11 a.m., police cars still were surrounding the Sun Trust Bank and investigators still were interviewing employees. Video surveillance from inside the bank was being retrieved as well.
Asked about the employees inside the bank, Turner said, "When anything like this happens, it will shake you up. Rightly so."
