Group blocks bus from moving
The Gaffney Police Department and the Cherokee County School District are both investigating a Monday afternoon incident during which a school bus carrying high school students was blocked from moving on Sarratt Street after it was surrounded by a large group of people.
School bus supervisor Ann Elliot said a videotape from the school bus was turned over to a school resource officer, though the tape only shows what was occurring inside the bus.
Prior to reaching Sarratt Street, Elliot said the tape showed everything was calm. All the students on the bus were seated and there wasn’t a lot of noise.
On Sarratt Street, however, the school bus became surrounded by a group of people who blocked the path of the bus, forcing the school bus driver to call for police.
Elliot estimated that the bus was stopped at the location for six or possibly seven minutes, before police broke up the crowd and the bus was able to continue on its way.
School officials planned to talk to students from that bus before the bus left school Tuesday afternoon.
It was unclear Tuesday what sparked the incident, though no injuries or property damage were reported.
Also unclear is whether a fight on nearby King Street later in the day was related to the school bus incident. Police were dispatched to the area of King Street regarding a report of a large crowd and a fight in progress, which escalated to a shots-fired call before police arrived.
No incident report has been filed yet in connection with either police response but no shooting injuries were reported. Both Gaffney Police and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call on King Street.
