Back to school party

 Elks Lodge No. 1305 will have a back to school party on Saturday, Aug. 28, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. for children in kindergarten through age 12. There will be games, crafts, a pizza lunch, and goody bags along with a drug awareness program and a program by the Gaffney City Fire Department. Holiday hours

 The Cherokee County Solid Waste Collection, Recycling, Landfill and Convenience Departments will be closed on Labor Day, Sep. 6. You may use extra containers for recycle materials and household garbage on Monday, Sept. 13, for overflow.

Angelfood Ministries

 The Senior Centers of Cherokee County is a host site for Angelfood Ministries. Orders can now be placed at the Blacksburg Senior Center as well as the Gaffney Senior Center. Hours for Blacksburg ordering are 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Monday- Friday. Gaffney hours are 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday- Friday. Meals offered range from allergen-free food boxes to convenience meals to different variety meals. The "Signature Box," enough to feed a family of four for a week, is $31. "Convenience Meals" are great for seniors and diabetics; just heat and serve. September's orders have a "Steak and Chicken" box for $25 and a "Bit O' Blessing" box for $21. You can also visit the web page to view menus for the current month. Ordering deadline is Sept. 19. Orders can be picked up on Sept. 24 at the Senior Center on Rutledge Avenue.

Fund raisers

 Gaffney Masonic Lodge No. 186 will have a barbecue fundraiser for Cherokee County Meals on Wheels. Home-cooked pork barbecue, beef hash and slaw will be available. Pints of barbecue and beef hash are $7 and slaw is $3 a pint. The sale start at 7 a.m on Labor Day, Sept. 6, and ends at noon at the Masonic Lodge, 219 E. Floyd Baker Blvd.

 Buffalo Volunteer Fire Department will be selling barbecue and hash on Labor Day, Sept. 6, at the main and sub-station starting at 8 a.m. and continuing until sold out. Pints are $7 each with a special of 3 pints for $20. The main station is at 137 Blackwell Road (864-839- 4500) and the substation is at 1136 N. Mountain St. (864-839-4551).

Support group

 A Celebrate Recovery support group, a 12- step Christ-centered program, is held on Fridays at 6 p.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church in Blacksburg. Call 864-839-6643 for information.

Senior Center news

 “Granny’s Closet” is now open at the Gaffney Senior Center, 499 W. Rutledge Ave., from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Everyone is invited to come in and browse. The closet accepts donations of clothes, shoes, kitchen items, pictures, toys, furniture, etc. Tax receipts will be given for donations and the center will come pick up items if necessary. Call Leslie, 498-2725, for more information or to receive a brochure. All money raised will benefit seniors adults in Cherokee County.

Class reunions

 The Gaffney High School Class of 1985 will have its 25-year class reunion on October 9 at 7 p.m. at the Gaffney Country Club, 267 Huggin Road. Classmates are asked to pay $25. Mail check or money order to: Gaffney High Class of 1985, P.O. Box 1873, Gaffney, SC 29342. Make check or money order payable to GHS Class of 1985. Upon receiving payment, additional information will be mailed. Red Cross training

 The Cherokee County Service Center of the American Red Cross is offering the following community classes in September: Sept. 2, standard first aid, 9 a.m., fee; Sept. 6, standard first aid, 6-9:30 p.m., fee; Sept. 9, new volunteer orientation, 10 a.m., free; Sept. 10, CPR adult, child and infant, 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m., fee; Sept. 13-14, standard first aid and CPR, adult, 6-9:30 p.m. each evening (must attend both nights), fee; Sept. 17, CPR adult child and infant review, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., fee; Sept. 25, babysitters' training (ages 11-15), 9 a.m.-4 p.m., fee. All classes will be at the ARC Service Center, 405 N. Logan St. Pre-payment and preregistration is required.  An interest meeting will be held Saturday, Aug. 28, at noon for all Blacksburg High School alumni interested in playing in the alumni football game in November.
