By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

The future stars of Gaffney, Byrnes and Spartanburg high school football teams will be on display at Brumbach Stadium on Thursday.

The middle school jamboree will begin at 5 p.m. with a matchup between McCracken, a feeder school for Spartanburg High School, and Mabry.

Mabry, which will field seventh and eighth grade teams, will then face Granard.

Thomas Jefferson and Blacksburg will battle before the jamboree concludes with a matchup between Gaffney Middle and D.R. Hill, a Byrnes High feeder school.

Ewing is participating in another jamboree and will not take part in the local middle school jamboree. Gaffney Middle head coach Brad Phillips said the jamboree gives fans a glimpse of what’s in store in the coming years for Gaffney and its rivals.

“It’s a chance for everybody to see the future stars,” Phillips said. “McCracken is Spartanburg High School and D.R. Hill feeds Byrnes.”

Calvin Leach is a name Gaffney fans should come to know in the future He plays middle linebacker and wide receiver for the Chiefs. Quarterback Greg Ellis returns as the offensive leader for the Chiefs, while Jacob Lemaster and Eb Covington are the anchors on the offensive and defensive lines.

Except for Mabry, each of the teams will play one half against their opponent.
