More reps should help Indians

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

Gaffney played a nearly mistakefree first half. The Indians made too many costly miscues in the second half. The Indians’ execution will improve with more repetitions.

Those were the observations of Gaffney head coach Dan Jones after reviewing the film of this past Friday’s 21-14 victory over Boiling Springs.

“Defensively in the first half, we limited them to just two first downs. In the second half, (Boiling Springs) had a long drive and we threw an interception and we put the defense back on its heels,” Jones said.

Injuries have decimated the defense, forcing the coaching staff to play even more untested players. The result was some blown assignments and breakdowns.

There also were too many missed assignments on offense, Jones said. The missed assignments were caused, in part, by an aggressive Bulldog defense that blitzed frequently. But Jones wasn’t offering any excuses.

“We could have blocked it though if we’d followed our assignments,” Jones noted.

The Indians hoped to be more productive in the red zone this season with quarterback DeEdward Burris under center instead of operating out of the shotgun. But that didn’t pan out on Friday.

“We had planned to be in the power eye, but we were injured there,” Jone said.

The coaching staff planned to use defensive lineman Rod Oglesby as the blocking back, but he’s out with a leg injury.

On a bright note, Jones praised the effort of wideout Quinshad Davis, who had two touchdown catches.
