An 89-year-old Chesnee woman died at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center on Wednesday afternoon about two hours after a car crash that occurred on Chesnee Highway near Cowpens National Battleground.

On Thursday, Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler was able to confirm that an autopsy showed Alma L. Jenkins, of East Union Street, died as a result of injuries she suffered in the crash. Her death has been ruled accidental, Fowler said.

The fatal collision occurred at 3:09 p.m., according to Trooper Billy Elder of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Jenkins was a front seat passenger in a 2005 Honda driven by Carolyn Cromer Johnson, of Lee Street, Chesnee.

Fowler and Elder both said Johnson was headed north on Highway 11 (Chesnee Highway) when her vehicle was struck by a southbound 1992 Toyota driven by a juvenile, whose name has not been released.

Fowler said the 16- year-old driver of the Toyota was attempting to make a left turn onto Highway 110 at the time of the crash, resulting in a near head-on collision with Johnson’s vehicle.

Elder said the crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol’s Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team.

Jenkins was transported by ambulance to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. She died at 5:39 p.m. Wednesday.

Jenkins is the seventh person to die as a result of an accident on Cherokee County roadways this year.
