Steely Pan Steel Band kicks off Arts Council’s 34th season

2010-2011 year features outstanding lineup of performances

The Limestone College-Cherokee County Arts Council has lined up another year of great performances for its 34th year. Set to perform during the 2010-2011 season are the Steely Pan Steel Band, the Western Piedmont Symphony, Saint Louis Brass Quintet and the Drowsy Chaperone. All performances will be in Fullerton Auditorium at Limestone College.

The Steely Pan Steel Band will perform Tuesday, Sept. 28, at 7:30 p.m.

Consisting of 20 performers and 40 steel drums, including drum set and percussion, this lively ensemble has gained a national and international reputation since forming in 1984. The and performs a variety of music from traditional soca/calypsos, to classical, to rock and roll, and even traditional Appalachian Mountain music and has performed at universities, art festivals, and schools throughout the country. Each year the band also travels to Trinidad and Tobago to observe and participate in performing competitions and further research the art of steel drums. The energetic and colorful ensemble will bring a little of the Caribbean to Gaffney,

The Western Piedmont Symphony will take the stage on Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m.

The symphony was organized in 1964 to promote symphonic music in the North Carolina upstate. Through the years, the orchestra has rapidly grown in size and programming and today presents Masterworks concerts, educational concerts, sponsors a Youth Symphony and provides a home to the Piedmont Percussion Ensemble.

John Gordon Ross returns for his 20th season as music director and conductor. In recent years, Ross has been guest conductor of the Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra and The Lima Symphony. The program will include virtuoso pianist Gregory Knight performing the dazzling Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini by Sergei Rachmaninoff as well as the orchestra's performance of the monumental Symphonic Fanfasfique by Hector Berloiz.

The Saint Louis Brass Quintet will perform on Jan. 25, 2011, at 7:30 p.m.

The group, formed in 1964, has performed more than 2,500 concerts and has entertained audiences of all ages. In addition to performances in the U.S, the quintet has toured and performed at major international festivals in Norway, India, Japan, Mexico, Germany and Sweden. This unique ensemble, made up of professional musicians and university faculty members, performs the great music for brass – from the works of today's composers to the magnificent Baroque. In addition, they offer lighter fare – popular music of the Americas, music of Mexico, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Stephen Foster.

The Drowsy Chaperone is set for production March 31, April 1-2 and April 8- 9, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. and April 10, 2011, at 3 p.m.

A rare combination of unprecedented originality and blinding talent, the Drowsy Chaperone boldly addresses a great unspoken desire in all our hearts: to be entertained. Opening on Broadway in May 2006, this wildly successful musical ran for 674 performances and won the Tony Award for Best Book and Best Musical Score.

The lavish production pays tribute to the Jazz-age shows of the 1920s and the power those shows held to transport us into a dazzling fantasy and to lift our spirits in times of sadness. It all begins when a die-hard musical-theatre fan plays his favorite album on his turntable, and the musical literally bursts to life in his living room, telling the rambunctious tale of a brazen Broadway starlet trying to find, and keep, her true love.
