A 56-year-old city man had to be flown for medical treatment Saturday afternoon after he was shot in the stomach during a dispute inside a Calton Drive home.
While Spartanburg Regional Medical Center could provide no updates on Sunday, police said Winford Avery Wood, 56, of Calton Drive, was listed in stable condition.
The incident remained under investigation Sunday and no one has been charged, though police indicated in a report that the incident may have been a case of self-defense.
Police initially were dispatched to Calton Drive at 4:18 p.m. Saturday in reference to a domestic dispute. While police were en route, though, emergency dispatchers upgraded the incident to a shooting.
Gaffney Police Sgt. Chad Hutchins, the first to arrive at the scene, wrote in a report that he observed Wood standing in the front yard, covered with blood, and Cal Dean Jefferies, 61, standing on the porch of the home, holding a 9 mm handgun.
The officer said Jefferies, who was bleeding from a gash on the top of his head, immediately complied with a command to drop the weapon.
Wood was uncooperative and told police he didn’t want them to touch him, the officer wrote.
Police interviewed numerous witnesses and received similar accounts, according to the officer’s report. Witnesses told police that the incident began when Wood struck another man, who was holding a small child, about the face and head and Jefferies tried to break up the altercation.
Wood allegedly responded by grabbing Jefferies’ walking cane and striking him over the head, causing the wooden cane to break into two jagged pieces, police said in the report. .
When Jefferies attempted to walk away, the police report states, he was struck in the head a second time.
Jefferies reportedly then went to his bedroom, where he retrieved a 9 mm handgun. Wood, who allegedly followed him, raised the broken cane towards Jefferies again and Jefferies fired two warning shots into the floor, police were told.
The police report states that Jefferies subsequently fired a third shot when Wood lunged at him again, striking Wood in the abdomen.
After being shot, Wood allegedly grabbed a walking stick from another man in the home and threw him to the floor.
Police recovered three spent shell casings and other evidence at the scene.
Sgt. Hutchins wrote in his report that Jefferies, who has numerous health problems, was unable to flee from the assault or to fight back. In addition, police said Jefferies feared for his life.
Numerous paramedics from Upstate Carolina Medical Center and City of Gaffney firefighters responded to the scene. Wood was flown directly to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center from an emergency landing zone set up in the parking lot of a Buford Street church.
