Dorman throws defense a curve with return of starting QB

Reggie Flemming Reggie Flemming Last week when the Gaffney High defense coaches got down to the serious business of developing a game plan to contain Dorman’s explosive weapons, they weren’t envisioning Nelson Hughes being one of them.

That’s because the talented Dorman signal caller was hurt in a scrimmage and wasn’t expected to be in the lineup on Friday.

But Hughes started and played well, orchestrating the efficient Dorman offense.

“He shows up and plays,” Gaffney codefensive coordinator Kevin Phillips said. “We thought with the other quarterback, they would be more run oriented.”

But Hughes was a solid 12 for 17 for 209 yards and no interceptions.

“(Hughes) gave us some problems,” Phillips said. “He was accurate.”

Phillips was displeased with the number of blown assignments on defense, but praised the effort of outside linebacker Reggie Flemming, who took the spot of Joey Copeland.

Snoop Byers, the team’s best cornerback who was injured in the preseason, was forced into action when Marques Brannon was knocked from the game. Defensive lineman Edward Bigby, also returned from an injury on Friday.

“I was disappointed in the rsults, but not the effort,” Phillips said. “The effort was there. Hopefully, we’ll get better.”
