A Gaffney teen was taken for medical treatment in Spartanburg following a Monday night shooting incident on Cherokee Avenue that remains under investigation by the Gaffney Police Department.
Police said 17-year-old Shaquille Pough, of Cherokee Avenue, was shot in a parking lot in the 800 block at about 9:10 p.m. Monday.
A police report states the bullet wound was about three inches above the mid-line of his chest. While First Responders initially called for a helicopter to transport Pough for treatment, the teen ultimately was driven by ambulance to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A hospital spokeswoman confirmed Tuesday the teen was treated and released.
Police wrote in a report that they received conflicting stories about what happened.
“It’s still under investigation,” Police Chief Rick Turner said Tuesday. “Police officers and detectives are following leads and taking statements.”
Turner added that anyone who has information is asked to call the Gaffney Police Department’s detective division at 489-8115.
According to the written police report about the Monday night incident, police found Pough seated in
chair upon their arrival and officers noted he had an obvious wound to his chest.
Pough told officers he did not know who fired the shot, the report states.
A relative of Pough told police that suspects in a car pulled into the parking lot and began to argue with Pough, according to the report. The relative told police that the suspects then began to throw rocks toward Pough’s residence.
A popping noise then was heard, according to the report.
Police noted in their report, however, that independent witnesses from nearby 2nd and 3rd streets gave conflicting statements, but no shell casings were located in the area of the shooting as described by the independent witnesses.
One witness provided police with the names of several suspects, but those names were redacted from the police report that was made public.
The Monday night shooting was the second in two days within the City of Gaffney limits, and the third shooting incident in the county in as many days.
A 56-year-old man was shot in the stomach during an Aug. 28 incident on Calton Drive in Gaffney that still is under investigation by the Gaffney Police Department.
Also on Aug. 28, a 46-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg at a Carroll Drive, Blacksburg, residence. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office determined the incident on Carroll Drive was accidental.
