Indians make strides in setback

Gaffney coach Dan Jones figures that if the nationally-ranked Dorman Cavaliers are as good as advertised, then the Indians aren’t that far behind.
“If (Dorman) is No. 17 in the country and No. 1 in the state, then we’re pretty close,” Jones said.
The Cavs took advantage of three Gaffney turnovers en route to a 21-12 victory at The Reservation Friday.
A review of the game tape strengthened the belief that the Indians’ three turnovers were the difference in the game. One of the fumbles was a result of poor execution, while miscommunication between quarterback and running back was the reason for the other. Both mistakes are correctable, Jones said.
“We can get that straight,” he said.
Quarterback DeEdward Burris was in good form on Friday, completing 15 of his 23 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns. The offensive line also played well, Jones said.
The play of the defense was once again a bright spot, but Jones said he was a bit disappointed that Dorman answered Gaffney’s first score with a time-consuming drive.
Despite holding their own against the top receiving corps in the state, the Indians are standing pat in the secondary. Cornerback Snoop Byers, who returned to action Friday after an injury, will move to free safety.
Jones said Marques Brannon was so effective as Byers’ replacement at cornerback that he deserves to be in the starting lineup. Coby McDowell has played very well at the other cornerback spot.
Notes: Defensive lineman Edward Bigby, who returned from an achilles problem this past Friday, is scheduled to have an MRI on his injured knee. OLB Quan Weeks may play this weekend after suffering a broken wrist in a jamboree.
