June Haas

June Nesbitt Lipscomb Haas, 99, died at her home on Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010.

A native of Spartanburg County, she was born on Aug. 29, 1911, the daughter of the late Florence Augusta Foster and Wilbern Calhoun Nesbitt. She was legally adopted by her great aunt and uncle, Sallie Foster and Junius Knott Lipscomb, when her mother died in 1913.

She was a 1929 graduate of Gaffney High School, a 1933 graduate of Hollins College and received a Masters in Social Work from William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Va. She worked in Virginia and Columbia in child welfare before returning to Gaffney.

She was married for 44 years to the late Rawley Dewitt Haas and is survived by two children, Dr. Robert J. Haas (Jean) of Spartanburg and Sarah Haas Boyd (George) of Atlanta, Ga.; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Haas Freeman (Michael) of Asheville, N.C., Sarah Haas Rigby (Mark) of Atlanta and Dr. Robert J. Haas, Jr. (Romana) of Denver, Colo.; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, a young infant and Fred Benson Nesbitt, and a sister, Florence Foster Lipscomb.

She felt very fortunate that her life included great friends and loving caregivers who made it possible for her to remain in her home. These caregivers included Thelma Watkins who had been with her for 12 years, Patricia Clemons, Almarie Elmore, Ann Byers, Peggy Allen and many others.

She was a lifelong active member of the First Baptist Church and participated in numerous school and community activities and organizations.

The family would like to express a special thanks to Interim Healthcare Hospice for their loving care and support to the entire family during a difficult time.

Graveside services will be held Friday, Sept. 3, at 10:30 a.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens with Dr. M. B. Morrow Jr. and the Rev. Joel Sellers officiating.
