A too familiar story

On a balmy evening in Greenwood, Gaffney’s comeback was more of a throwback - to last week.
Similar to last week’s loss to Dorman, the Indians put together a spirited secondhalf rally after falling behind by double-digits - thanks to costly turnovers. Unlike last Friday, however, the Indians actually had a chance on their final drive of the game to win, but backup quarterback Joey Copeland, who was forced into action seven plays into the drive after starter DeEdward Burris suffered a hip injury, was sacked on fourth down as Greenwood held on for a 10-7 victory.
Gaffney drops to 1-2 on the season.
“The kids are disappointed,” Gaffney coach Dan Jones said. “I think the kids’ effort is there. We just keep shooting ourselves in the foot.”
Against Dorman, the Indians turned the ball over on their first three series, and as a result trailed 14-0 in the first quarter. On Friday, Gaffney fumbled on two of its first three possessions and Greenwood capitalized to build a 10-0 halftime lead.
The Indians also were hurt by Greenwood’s grinding, control-the-clock running attack, which rolled up 227 yards and consumed nearly 32 minutes of the clock.
“It’s the first time we saw that (wingbone attack),” Jones said. “It’s a tough offense.”
After running just six plays in the third quarter without a first down, Gaffney’s offense came alive in the fourth quarter to make things interesting. Burris orchestrated a 12- play, 81-yard drive, capped by a 24-yard pass to Wookie Littlejohn, to cut the score to 10-7 with 4:53 left in the game.
The drama, however, was far from over.
The defense stopped Greenwood on fourth-andinches with 1:59 to play to give the Indians one last chance. Burris converted a third-and-13 with a 15-yard pass to Quinshad Davis. Two plays later, Burris left the field after a sack as Copeland took over on a crucial third- -and-16 at the Gaffney 49. Copeland got the first down with a 18- yard completion to Littlejohn.
Another completion to Davis moved the ball to the Greenwood 19. But two incompletions, sandwiched between a sack, set up a fourthand 14 at the 23. The storybook finish wasn’t meant to be as a host of Eagles sacked Copeland to end the threat.
“Joey (Copeland) came in and did a great job,” Jones said.
Gaffney had 206 total yards - 179 through the air - in the first half but had nothing to show for it. DJ Anderson recovered C.J. Miller’s fumble at the GHS 40. Nine plays later, Ran Ethridge scored on a 7- yard run.
Late in the second quarter, Burris tried unsuccessfully to pick up his fumble instead of falling on the ball. Jamison Chalmers recovered the ball and Greenwood turned it into three points and a 10-0 lead on Matt McManns’ 29-yard field goal.
With only 1:42 left before halftime, Gaffney took possession at its 13 and drove to the Eagle 6 on a Burris scramble. On the next play, Burris hit Davis near the goal line but time ran out in the first half before the Indians could spike the ball.
Gaffney travels to Union County (a loser to Broome) on Friday.
GAME NOTEBOOK
TIME OF POSSESSION - The Greenwood Eagles dominated time of possession against the Indians bend but don't beak defense. The Eagles ran the ball 53 times in chewing up more than 31 minutes on the clock. The Indians had just six offensive snaps in the third quarter.
FOURTH DOWN - The Indians were 0 for 5 on fourth-down conversions coming into Friday's game but converted 2 of their 3 fourth-down chances.
CLOSE BUT NOT END - Quinshad Davis has been the Indians' best player by far this season, so it's hard to criticize him. But it appeared he came out of the end zone to catch the ball late in the first half. Time then ran out before the Indians could run another play. By the way, Davis had 10 more catches to give him 22 for the season.
INJURY FRONT - Starting quarterback DeEdward Burris is expected to be in the lineup this week after suffering a hip flexor injury on the team's final drive. In other injury news, Edward Bigby missed the game after injuring his knee against Dorman. He missed all of the preseason with an achilles problem.
NO ENTHUSIASM - Although it's difficult to read a team's state-of-mind before a game, it appeared the Indians level of enthusiasm and intensity didn't match their opponents.
BURRIS STATS - Although the offense isn't scoring at an acceptable clip and is turning the ball over too much, you can't find fault with quarterback DeEdward Burris, who is completing 65 percent of his passes. Playing against tough defenses, he's thrown five touchdowns and only two interceptions.
