Sidewalks in city being modified

A project involving modifications to sidewalks to make them compliant with federal regulations caused more traffic congestion than usual on Floyd Baker Boulevard on Tuesday.

At Floyd Baker Boulevard and Beltline Road, crews poured sidewalks to comply with the specifications outlined in the and American with Disabilities Act, Department of Transportation Resident Construction Engineer Shane Parris said.

The project forced northbound traffic on Floyd Baker into a single lane from the post office to just beyond Beltline Road.

Parris explained that projects funded by stimulus money must comply with federal law, including the ADA.

"They must change the slope to the access of the sidewalk (to make it easier for handicapped individuals)," the DOT construction engineer said.

That's also the reason why crews have been busy replacing sidewalks at the intersections along Overbrook Drive, which was resurfaced with stimulus money earlier this year.

Parris estimated the cost of redoing a sidewalk at one corner of an intersection at about $1,200.
