'Jungle Book' kicks off new year Oct. 1 with cast of 50

Ginny Elmore, newly elected president of the Gaffney Little Theatre, has announced the lineup for the 2010-2011 year.

Opening the season is Jungle Book, a delightful musical based on the book by Rudyard Kipling. With a cast of 50, the show has been moved to Fullerton Auditorium and runs October 1 and 2 at 7:30 p.m. and closes with a matinee at 3 p.m. on October 3. The beloved characters Mowgli, Baloo, Bagheera and others face adventure after adventure in the jungle.

A second classic is The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, based on Washington Irving's immortal short story, will open at Gaffney Little Theatre on October 28, 29 and 30 at 7:30 p.m. and close on Sunday, Oct. 31, at 3 p.m.

This spooky Halloween show will keep audiences on the edge of their seats with thrills, chills and laughs as they meet the bumbling, awkward school teacher Ichabod Crane, the coquettish Katrina, and Ichabod's brutish rival, Brom Bones.

Two one-acts, The Women of Troy and Rome is Where the Heart Is, will be seen November 4, 5, 6 and 7, and will feature multi-generational roles for teens and adults. In the first play, the powerless, but still defiant, women of Troy, now the spoils of war, wait for the Greeks to decide their fate. Originally written by Euripides as a blazing protest against the way Athens treated the rights of women in such circumstances, this play, despite its ancient origins, concerns human dignity.

A comedy, Rome is Where the Heart Is, is a lovely adaptation of the original that tells the story of Charinus, a nice Roman boy who has fallen in love with a slave girl. Unfortunately, so has his father, who has more money. This is a show, casting teens and adults, with an incredible series of mistaken identities, confusion, pratfall, and comic disaster.

The 2011 season will open with an adult musical review written and directed by Dr. Tim Baxter-Ferguson and Dr. David Thompson, featuring outstanding musical talent from Gaffney and the surrounding area. The show will feature excepts from various musicals from the Broadway stage. Show dates are January 27, 28 and 29 at 7:20 p.m. and January 30 at 3 p.m.

The Wizard of Oz, L. Frank Baum's great classic, will take audiences down the yellow-brick road to the Emerald City, with Dorothy and her lovable friends, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow on March 17, 18 and 19 and March 24, 25, 26 and 27 at Gaffney Little Theatre. This second children's show of the season will provide a great evening of entertainment.

A rollicking comedy, Lying in State, by David Hyer brings a close to the season on April 28, 29 and 30 and May 1. Don't even think about voting in November 'til you've seen this blue, white and red hot new comedy.

Can a dead guy run for the Senate? Sure! Better yet, can he attend his own campaign fund raiser? Only if you can find the body! This is an hilarious political comedy full of zany characters looking for love, votes, and a big purple squirrel named Mel.
