Spartanburg Herald-Journal executive editor speaker at AAUW meeting Sept. 13

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) will meet at noon Monday, Sept. 13, at House of Pizza, 1640 E. Floyd Baker Blvd. According to incoming president, Jan Sarratt, the year’s programs should whet members’ interest in both local and state affairs.

The branch’s concentration this year is South Carolina state government, with emphasis on the responsibilities of the General Assembly and the governor. Michael Smith, executive editor of the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, will begin this series of programs, speaking on the topic, “S.C. Governmental Structure, How It Got That Way and How It Impacts Us!”

Smith has worked in journalism since 1983. From 1983 until 1986, he served as the Cherokee County Bureau reporter for the Spartanburg Herald Journal. He continued to work as a reporter until 1995 when he became the newspaper’s editorial page editor. He remained in that position until 2008, when he became executive editor.

In addition to the concentration on South Carolina government, the year’s agenda will include programs on the Holocaust, new developments at Limestone College, the Cherokee Alliance of Visual Artists, a Christmas extravaganza, and the annual recognition of Cherokee County high school and Limestone College senior women.

This is an open meeting for the community as the program’s content should be of interest to all Cherokee County residents. Since seating is limited, the branch suggests nonmembers call 865-489- 9817 if they plan to attend.

Any person with an associate or baccalaureate degree from an accredited college is eligible for membership in AAUW. For additional information regarding membership or the September meeting, contact the membership chairman at 864-489-0826.
