‘Back to School Bash’ planned in Blacksburg
Adults aren’t the only ones who enjoy the weekend, you know.
The Blacksburg Business Association (BBA) will host a “Back to School Bash” this Saturday at the town’s community house on Shelby Street from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
The event is free to all.
According to business association president George Kirby, the event is something the organization looks forward to hosting, as it has for the past four years.
“The driving force is the kids,” Kirby said. “We want something for our children to be able to do on Saturday nights. This will serve that need at least for one Saturday during the school year.”
Vendors will also be on hand to serve hot dogs, hamburgers and an array of other food items. Blacksburg High School guidance counselor Billy Tansou will also be on hand, serving as the DJ for the event, playing a variety of music for the listening and dancing pleasure of those in attendance.
Blacksburg Town Council recently approved a request by the BBA to assist the organization with $7,000 in Hospitality Tax funds, some of which will be used to help with the “Back to School Bash,” next month’s “Octoberfest” festivities featuring premier beach music band “The Fantastic Shakers” and its “Christmas On Main” activities.
“Town council has been a tremendous help to us, with them seeming to be rather pleased with what we are doing and where the BBA is going,” Kirby said. “We get their blessing before doing anything and when they can do their part to support us, they do.”
Kirby said he is looking forward to drawing quite a crowd for the event, which he says is not just for children of the Iron City.
“We’re looking forward to having a great time. The last two a tremendous number of children came; hopefully we can do better this year,” the BBA president said. “Even though it is being held in Blacksburg, we hope all from Cherokee County and surrounding counties and municipalities come and enjoy this.”
Should it rain Saturday, festivities will be moved to Blacksburg Middle School.
