One thing is for certain: The city’s current visitors center will have a new tenant. The identity of the new tenant is still anybody’s guess, though.

The city plans to move into its new visitors and visual arts center in the former post office building late this month, leaving a portion of its current space on North Limestone Street unoccupied. The city uses a portion of the space for storage.

The city has considered several options for the space, but after some discussion, city leaders instructed Gaffney Administrator James Taylor to rent the space to a specific type of business, such as a restaurant, specialty shop or coffee house.

Taylor said Friday prospective tenants who would add value to the downtown area have expressed an interest in the site but he declined to identify them by name.

Taylor said the market rate per square foot in the area ranges from $8 to $9.
