Felicia Davis
Felicia Foster Davis of 143 Camellia Gardens St., Morganton, N.C., widow of James Davis Jr., passed away Tuesday morning, Sept. 7, 2010, at Burke Hospice in Valdese, N.C.
Daughter of the late Rufus H. Foster Sr. and the late Henrietta Crystal Littlejohn Foster, she was a native of Gaffney and a member of Dunton United Methodist Church. After moving to Morganton, she attended Green Street Presbyterian Church, where she was pianist/ organist for many years. Mrs. Davis dedicated a lot her time playing the piano and organ at banquets, programs, funerals, churches and many other events. For many years on Mother’s Day, she helped play for the worship service at Dunton.
She was a graduate of Granard High School and received her B.S. degree from Bennett College in Greensboro, N.C., in 1949. After graduating from college, she began her teaching career at Highland School in Gaston County, N.C., where she taught music in the primary grades. She went to Burke County in 1950 and taught at Olive Hill School in the primary grades. While at Olive Hill, she was over the band program until 1953 and assisted with the band program from 1953 to 1954; and then in 1954- 1955, she took over the band directed it again for several years. While at Olive Hill, Mrs. Davis started the Rhythm Band for the primary grades. She also taught at Mountain View School until November, 1961; Willow Tree Elementary School in 1965; and in 1965 moved to Oak Hill Elementary School, where she taught first grade for 27 years. She retired in 1992 after 43 years of teaching. She continued to direct the former Olive Hill Chorus on numerous occasions since the closing of Olive Hill School.
She is survived by her son, James Foster Davis I (Kitty) of Morganton; a daughter, Felicia P. Davis of Greensboro; two grandchildren, James Foster Davis II and Jasimin Davis, both of Morganton; three brothers, Rufus H. Foster Jr., Ellington L. Foster (Thelma), both of Gaffney, and Dr. T. Littlejohn Foster (Sandy) of Charlotte; three sisters, Gloria F. Inabinette (Elijah), Rosmaree P. Foster, all of Gaffney, and Madelyn F. Daniels (Rev. Donald) of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and a host of other relatives.
Services will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 100 Silver Creek Road, Morganton, with the Rev. W. Fleming McIntosh officiating. Interment will follow in Shiloh A.M.E. Church Cemetery, 1323 North Powerhouse Road, Morganton.
The family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 10, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Ebony Funeral Home, 220 Avery Ave., Morganton, NC 28655.
