Maria Moss
Maria Moss of Gaffney passed away on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010, at Brookview Healthcare Center.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Grinter of Gaffney; two grandchildren, Nell Grinter of Atlanta, Ga., and Lawton Grinter and wife, Felicia, of Lakewood, Colo.; and a devoted family friend, Dr. Samuel Orr of Gaffney.
Maria Moss was born in Columbus, Ohio, on Jan. 18, 1916, the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth Bellis. She spent many years in Columbus and attended Capitol University there. She was the widow of Harold Moss. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Moss was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Bellis of Columbus, Ohio, and a sister, Dorothy Freshour of Newark, Ohio.
She was a member of Limestone Presbyterian Church, where she participated in the Women of the Church and taught Sunday School. She was very active in the community, serving on the boards of the Salvation Army and the Cherokee County Public Library. She was also very active in Girl Scouts for many years. She was director of Girl Scouts in Anderson and both a Girl Scout and Brownie Scout leader in Gaffney. She was an assistant to the librarian at Limestone College for seven years and worked at Hartzog’s Jewelers for many years.
She cared deeply for many things. Along with scouting, she was a lifelong Democrat, an excellent bridge player, and a rescuer of stray animals – several of whom became her beloved pets. One of her favorite sayings was, “If you’re going to do a job, do it well.” Her life was a testament to that.
The family would like to thank the staff of Brookview for their kindness and caring. They made her last days as comfortable and pleasant as possible. That meant a lot to her and a lot to us.
A memorial service will be held at Limestone Presbyterian Church on Friday, Sept. 10, at 11 a.m. Visitation will take place in the church parlor at 10 a.m. Her ashes will be interred at Frederick Memorial Gardens in a private ceremony.
Any memorial gifts may be made to Limestone Presbyterian Church, 101 E. Jefferies St., Gaffney, SC 29340; or the American Heart Association, 310-B Bennett Center Drive, Greer, SC 29650.
