Elizabeth (Betsy) McDavid Campbell of Naples, Fla., died Monday, Sept. 6, 2010. She was born on April 14, 1917, in Greenville. Betsy and her husband, Bob, lived in Gaffney for many years.

Betsy is survived by her two daughters, Jane Campbell Hinton and Schuyler Campbell, and four grandchildren, Schuyler Campbell, Robert Scholl, Anne Marie Reinhold and Vincent Scholl.

Betsy spent her life helping others, especially children. Betsy believed in helping young people teach each other values, attitudes and skills that would enable each of them to contribute in their community as envisioned by our Creator.

Betsy grew up in Greenville and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Furman University in 1938. That same year, she was married to Robert S. Campbell Jr. Bob passed away in 2003.

Betsy has received many awards for her years of service to various organizations. Betsy was an active leader in the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation in Gaffney, where she served in most available positions. She was the first president of the Friends of the Library in Gaffney. She was presented the Henry B. Richardson Award at York Place Episcopal Home for Children. From 1993 to 1995, she served as a member of the Board of Trustees at York Place. In 1998, Gov. David Beasley presented her with the Order of the Palmetto.

Limestone College presented Betsy with an Honorary Alumnus Award in 1990 and awarded her an Honorary Doctorate in Public Service in 1999. In December, 2000, Betsy received the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humanities from Clemson University. Furman University presented Betsy with an Honorary Doctor of Humanities Degree in April, 2002, in recognition of her tireless advocacy for disadvantaged children.

For many years, Betsy worked one on one with developmentally impaired and emotionally disturbed children. She has supported many youth initiatives, including the Sprouting Wings Program at Clemson University and the South Carolina Botanical Gardens, helping children succeed through connecting with nature. She created the Campbell Young Leaders program to assist underserved children in achieving their potential.

Through her devotion to children and her desire for teaching, she established the Betsy M. Campbell Learning Symposium for Teachers through Clemson University. She also contributed to the establishment of the Betsy Campbell Carriage House on the Clemson campus.

Services will be held Friday, Sept. 10, at 2 p.m at the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation with the Rev. Jenny Cooper and the Rev. Bill O’Connell officiating. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery.

Visitation was Thursday, September 9, from 6- 8 p.m. at Blakely Funeral Home.
