Indians to debut new gold helmets

The Gaffney High football team is going for the gold next season - when it comes to headgear.

Gaffney coach Dan Jones said Wednesday that the Indians will be sporting new gold helmets in 2011, instead of the traditional black-colored headgear.

Actually, Jones said there is precedent for the gold helmet.

“Coach (Bob) Prevatte’s teams wore gold helmets,” Jones said. “And next year will be the 50th reunion of his 1961 state championship team.”

Jones said the helmets will resemble the ones worn by Notre Dame and Wofford.

He’s undecided whether there will be a black stripe down the middle of the helmet.

There will be no change to the team’s helmet logo.

“I think it was time for a change,” Jones said.

The players have embraced the new look, according to Jones.

“The kids are excited about it,” he said.

The Indians will debut the new helmets during spring practice, scheduled for May 1-21.

Jones said spring practice will culminate with a spring game either on May 19 or 20.
