A woman and her infant child escaped harm Tuesday after a fire broke out in their Gaffney apartment.

The fire began in the kitchen of an apartment at Creekside at Wellington Apartments on Overbrook Drive at about 1:20 p.m. Tuesday. Gaffney Fire Chief Nathan Ellis said a female tenant left her stovetop unattended to check on her 2-week-old infant and subsequently heard popping noises coming from the kitchen.

“She returned to the kitchen to see flames coming from the stovetop,” Ellis relayed.

The woman grabbed her baby and ran to the apartment office for help.

A worker at the apartment complex ran to the scene and deployed two fire extinguishers inside the apartment just before firefighters arrived. The first firefighters on scene reported a “working fire,” the chief relayed, and they commenced an immediate interior attack.

The flames were knocked down in just a few minutes.

Ellis said fire damage was contained to the kitchen but the remainder of the apartment sustained extensive smoke and heat damage. Damage to contents was deemed significant.

Two adults and an infant lived in the apartment. No damage was reported to surrounding apartments.

While firefighters were knocking down the flames, they were advised a dog still was inside. Firefighters searched the apartment and found the dog named “Gracie” in a second floor bedroom.

The frightened dog didn’t want leave on its own, firefighters relayed, so it was carried to safety.

Ellis, who reunited the dog with its owner, said the dog was uninjured.
