On Thursday afternoon, the sweet smell of hickory smoke permeated the air around the Gaffney Fire Department headquarters as Firefighter Michael Scruggs, seen in photo getting ready to place a 13-pound brisket in a smoker, was putting together the fire department members’ evening meal. As a hobby, Scruggs is a member of a competition barbecue team called the Appalachian Q Crew.
