County receives settlement check

In these times of cashstrapped local governments, every little bit of revenue helps.

That was the reaction expressed by an appreciative Cherokee County Council after receiving a check for $7,349 from 7th Circuit Solicitor Barry Barnette at Monday’s council meeting .

Barnette explained the money was part of a settlement in a class action lawsuit filed against Lending Tree.

The settlement stems from charges brought by multiple prosecutors that alleged Lending Tree didn’t properly disclose to borrowers the payments it receives from the lenders it sells borrower applications to, as required by a South Carolina law.

Barnette said the county will receive another check of the same amount in August.

Cherokee County Interim Administrator Ben Clary recommended the money be placed in a restricted account for remodeling expenses to the offices that remain at the courthouse after others relocate to the new county administration building.
