GHS track team gets boost from transfer
Gaffney High boys track team members participate in some stretching exercises on Wednesday. The Gaffney boys track team has received a boost from an unusual place - rival Dorman High School.
Alejandro Brown, the defending Region II-4A champ in the long jump, has transferred to Gaffney.
In addition to his specialty, Brown will compete in the triple jump and 100 and 200 meter relay events, Gaffney coach James Davis said.
Brown should be an immediate help to a team that finished third in Region III-4A last season.
Davis described his team as “young but exciting.”
“Anytime you have a lot of young kids that means you are building something,” Davis said. “It shows the program is progressing.”
Despite its youth, Davis said the Indains are capable of competing for a region championship. A season ago, Spartanburg and Northwestern finished 1-2 at the region tournament.
A couple of football players will take their talents to the track. Defensive linemen Rod Oglesby and Edward Bigby will compete in the discus and shot put.
Darion Elmore is back to defend his region championship in the high jump, while Denzel Lattimore will compete in the long and triple jump events.
As for the sprints, Marquis Jackson is one of the Indians to watch along with Hyleck Foster and O’bryant Davidson.
The Indians will participate in a scrimmage on Feb. 25 at Spartanburg.
A trip to the Furman Invitational is one of the highlights of the team’s regular season schedule.
Davis said he hopes to schedule at least five home matches this season.
