Limestone drops home opener, 6-3

STAFF REPORTS

The Limestone College (1-2) baseball team could not get any momentum working in the late innings as it fell to Anderson University 6-3 in the season home opener Wednesday at Bob Prevatte Field.

Deadlocked at 3-3 through the first four innings, the Trojans used an RBI single by Erick Sanderson to grab a one-run advantage in the fifth before tacking on two more in the sixth.

Josh Hickman made it a two-run game with one gone in the frame, nailing a solo shot over the leftfield fence, before Blake May came through with a two-out RBI knock to give Anderson a 6-3 lead.

Limestone attempted to rally in the home half of the fifth after senior first baseman Jake Rierson started the inning with a leadoff single.

However, a 3-6-3 double play in the next at-bat proved to be the deciding factor as Anderson’s pitching retired the final 14 batters in order to hand the Saints a 6- 3 loss.

To start the game, the Trojans needed just two pitches to put a run on the scoreboard as Brett Cash smacked a leadoff homer to the opposite field to give the visitors a quick 1-0 lead.

The Saints came right back to tie the game in the bottom of the first after an RBI double by sophomore leftfielder Chad Balderman chased home sophomore second baseman KJ McAllister.

Anderson took full advantage of an LC error in the top of the second as they plated a pair of runs, capped by Cash’s sacrifice fly.
