Mauldin most likely first-round playoff opponent for GHS

It’s the high school league’s version of March Madness. Frantic February, a.k.a. the state basketball playoffs, will tip-off next week.
Gaffney will open at home Wednesday. The Indians’ most likely first-round foe is Mauldin, while J.L. Mann is another possibility. Boiling Springs is a longshot at this point. The South Carolina High School League will release the brackets Saturday afternoon.
As champions of Region III-4A, the Indians could host as many as three playoff games before traveling to the Bi-Lo Center for the upper state championship.
Playoff speculation, though, is a bit premature since the Indians must still play an improving Spartanburg squad tonight in the regular season finale.
Gaffney coach Mark Huff said the Vikings offer a stiff challenge.
“I think they’ve won three games in a row,” Huff said. “Obviously, they are playing better and are much improved. But I always thought they were good from the get go.”
Huff said the Indians must control the Vikings’ guard tandem of Kian Lewis and Aaron Crawford. Both players are allregion caliber, according to Huff.
In the teams’ first matchup, Spartanburg big man JaQuile Oden was a factor defensively. He also scored 10 points.
