And the winners of the Gaffney Main Street Challenge are….well we won’t know until May 2.

The City of Gaffney is hosting a reveal party to announce the three winners of the challenge May 2 at 6 p.m. in the exhibit hall of the Gaffney Visitors Center and Art Gallery. The public is invited and encouraged to attend the party, during which the winning entrepreneurs will deliver a live pitch sharing the details of their business. After all three winners present their business, attendees will vote for their favorite and the one with the most votes will receive a People’s Choice Award.

“We want the people to get to know the businesses and support them so this challenge is successful for everyone,” said LeighAnn Snuggs, Director of Main Street.

The Gaffney Main Street Challenge, launched in January, received over 40 applications from entrepreneurs hoping to open shop in downtown Gaffney. A panel of seven judges, comprised of local and business leaders, narrowed the applicants to 14, who submitted a detailed five-year business plan. After careful review of the plans, judges held face-to-face interviews with the top five applicants, then selected the three winners.

Each winner will receive a $14,000 financial and in-kind benefits package, including rent supplements, advertising and bookkeeping services. All three businesses must open in a downtown location by Oct. 1.

“The real challenge is now extended to patrons,” concluded Gaffney Mayor Henry Jolly. “We need people to support these businesses long term. This is a great economic enhancement to our beautiful historic commercial district.”
