GHS soccer team picks up hardware

After a historic season, it’s no surprise the Gaffney High boys soccer team dominated the postseason awards with six players on the all-region team, including the player of the year,

Fernando Calderilla was named the Region 3-5A Player of the Year after scoring seven goals and five assists in leading the Indians to their first ever region championship and state playoff appearance.

Calderilla, who was named the team’s MVP, was first Indian ever named as the region’s top player.

Thomas LaFrancis, offensive MVP Angel Garcia, Chris Cline, Dorian Suarez, who also received the coaches award, and Richard Sealy also made the all-region team.

Garcia had a team-leading 12 goals and 16 assists, while LaFrancis chipped in wtih nine goals and five assists.

Cline, who received the coaches award, posted six goals and eight assists, and Suarez had four goals and an assist.

Sealy had three goals and an assist as a defender.

Calderilla and LaFrancis were selected to play in the North South Soccer Classic on June 24 in Rock Hill.

Gaffney’s Scott Simmons was named coach of the year.
