J.W. Sanders Jr. joins field of candidates vying for District 1 county council seat

Ledger Staff Writer

Ten minutes before the close of filing at noon Saturday, Rev. J.W. Sanders Jr. became the fifth candidate to file for the District 1 County Council seat left vacant with the death of longtime councilman Rufus Foster.

Sanders had lived in Duncan but presented a paid utility bill to election officials as proof of his move into the district.

Last week, Bail Bonding Company owner John Steen and Cherokee County school teacher Lyman Dawkins joined Johnny Sarratt Sr. and Hermenia Gardner in seeking the seat.

All five have filed as Democrats.

The filing period closed at noon Saturday.

The Democrat primary will be held Tuesday, Sept. 5, with any necessary runoff to be held two weeks later. The general election is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 7.

There will be no GOP primary since no candidate filed to run as a Republican in the minority district.
