Gaffney, S.C. — William E. “Bill” McCluney, 81, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, October 2, 2017 at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. He was the husband of Norma Lovingood Mc- Cluney for 58 years, and son of the late John Frank and Myrtle Peeler MCluney. A sister, Sarah Anne McCluney preceded him in death.

Mr. McCluney was a native of Cherokee County. His on-the-job training years were spent in Atlanta working with Thomas C. Brittain who taught him the construction business. He was a Veteran of the United States Army, having served with the 391st Engineer Battalion during the Berlin crisis of 1961- 1962. He was a member of the Associated General Contractors of the Carolinas, Home Builders Association of Cherokee County, Woodmen of The World and Civitan Club. He was an active member of Corinth Baptist Church, having served as a Deacon, Director of Sunday School, and Sunday school teacher in addition to serving on various committees.

Mr. McCluney was a 1954 graduate of Gaffney High School; He attended Southern Business College and was a graduate of Chicago Technical College. He was president and CEO of McCluney Construction and Development Company founded in 1966. Typical projects include the South Carolina Welcome Center, York County Library, Cherokee County Jail, classroom buildings at Chesnee Elementary School, Sandy Springs Baptist Church, Gaffney Fire Station, Corinth Baptist Church Activity and Classroom buildings, Gaffney Family Physicians Offices, Citizen and Southern National Bank, In & Out Store Buildings, Sav-Ton Service Stations, Freedom Lodge Motels, Pizza Inn Restaurant, and co-founder of Hidden Acres. After retirement, he worked as a construction consultant for several years. Mr. McCluney demonstrated attention to detail, quality standards in workmanship, honesty and integrity by being devoted to family, clients, employees, and business associates.

Mr. McCluney is survived by his sons, Frank Joseph “Joey” McCluney, of Gaffney, and Brian Urgel Mc- Cluney and wife, Patty, of Boiling Springs, S.C.; his sisters, Mary Florence Wooten of Augusta, GA, and Frances Lee Burns of Williston, S.C.; and a granddaughter, Ashley Brooks McCluney of Concord, N.C..

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at Blakely Funeral Home. The funeral service will immediately follow at 2 p.m. with Dr. Dwight Easler and Reverend Jerry Ford officiating. A private entombment will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Corinth Baptist Church, 190 Corinth Road, Gaffney, SC 29340, or to the charity of donor’s choice.

The family will be at the residence.
