Man shot to death Sunday

Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office investigators are investigating the shooting death of a Gaffney man following a fight Sunday afternoon.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler identified the victim as Sherman O. Tate, 33, of 524 Rutledge Avenue Apartment D-16.

The sheriff’s office was dispatched Sunday, Feb. 11 at 1:56 p.m. to a fight in progress on 3rd Avenue in Gaffney near 4th Street. Sheriff Steve Mueller said officers observed a large group of people outside a home in the 100 block of 3rd Avenue and a front storm door shattered on the home.

“The females on the front porch of the home refused to cooperate and provide any names or information in regards to anyone being shot,” Mueller said.

Responding police officers notified 9-1-1 dispatchers to contact Mary Black Health System - Gaffney to be on the lookout for any shooting victims. Mueller said officers continued to seek out any witnesses to the shooting in the immediate area of 3rd Avenue and 4th Street.

“Officers on scene were able to get witness information describing a large gathering of at least 30 people who observed several females and males fighting in the street,” Mueller said. “One of the males involved in the fight pulled out a handgun and fired several rounds. The gunshots caused the crowd to start running and fleeing from the area.”

While police were on scene, Mueller said dispatchers informed officers a shooting victim was at Mary Black Health System - Gaffney.

Additional officers went to the hospital emergency room and found Tate with a gunshot wound. Mueller said the victim was dropped off at the hospital outpatient doors by two black males in a black sports utility vehicle.

Mueller said the victim died before he could be airlifted to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Tate died in the emergency room Sunday at 4:05 p.m. Fowler said Tate sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office investigators have identified Ricky Eugene Garrison, 28, as a person of interest in the shooting incident, Mueller said. Garrison is described as 6’2, 195 pounds. His last known address was in Blacksburg.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday to assist with the death investigation by the coroner and sheriff’s offices.

“The investigation is ongoing and remains very active,” Mueller said. “Investigators believe the victim and the shooter knew each other and this was not a random shooting!”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIMESC or investigator April Haney at 864-619-2002 with any information related to the shooting or the person of interest.
