18-year-old killed by gunfire while inside vehicle; suspect arrestedFree Access





A 16-year-old has been arrested for murder following a Wednesday night shooting that left an 18-year-old dead.

The suspect, whose name was not released, will be tried as an adult, facing murder, attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to City of Gaffney Police Major Brian Blanton. The suspect was transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia awaiting a court hearing.

According to Gaffney police, the shooting occurred in the Zippity gas station parking lot, located at the intersection of West Floyd Baker Boulevard and Overbrook Drive.

Officers responded to a shots fired call in the area of 110 Overbrook Drive shortly after 11 p.m. Officers were able to obtain video surveillance footage of the shooting and collect physical evidence, Blanton said.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler identified the victim as 18-year-old Alexis Shaynne Griffin

Griffin was the passenger in an SUV being driven by her boyfriend on Overbrook Drive. Fowler reported two male subjects were seen on foot near the intersection of West Buford Street.

“Gunfire erupted with one of the bullets striking the vehicle and then Griffin,” Fowler said. “The boyfriend sped from the scene and drove the victim to Cherokee Medical Center where she died at 11:22 p.m.”

Information about the second individual was not released as of press time.

Fowler said an autopsy will be performed to assist with the investigation.
