  • The ever popular 16th Annual Swampfest at the Congaree 2018 is a two-day fall event and a unique opportunity to celebrate the nature, the people, and the rich heritage of Lower Richland County. People from all over travel to this event. Friday night’s event is the Down Home BBQ, Blues, & Soul Fest 2018. This is an outside event but it is tented and covered. RV Clubs also arrive from across the states. Each year this event is packed to capacity, we hope to see you this year!

    Special Music and Guests in Concert

    Howard Hewett (from the mega R&B Pop Group Shalamar with such hits as “Second Time Around”, “A Night To Remember”, “Make That Move”, and more! Hewett signed his solo deal with Elektra Records and in 1986, before the Miami trial, released his first solo album, I Commit to Love (R&B number 12), a solid urban album, plus the hit “Show Me” and music that yielded two R&B hits, “I’m for Real” (R&B number 2) and “Stay” (R&B number 8). The album also included “Say Amen”, a gospel tune that became a surprise hit on the Gospel as well as Urban charts and is one of Hewett’s many signature songs.

    Cherelle (R&B Songstress) American R&B songstress who gained fame in the mid-1980s. Her signature hits include “I Didn’t Mean To Turn You On”, “Where Do I Run To”, “Everything I Miss At Home”, and duets with R&B singer Alexander O’Neal such as “Saturday Love” and “Never Knew Love Like This.”

    Melba Moore (Tony Award Winning, Broadway Star, & Grammy nominated artist) Beatrice “Melba” Moore. Moore began her recording career in 1967, cutting the track “Magic Touch” which was left unreleased until 1986. It has become an enormous track on the Northern Soul Scene, eventually leading to Moore performing it live in 2009 at the Baltic Soul Weekender 3 in Germany north of Hamburg. She began her performing career in 1967 as Dionne in the original cast of the musical Hair along with Ronnie Dyson and Diane Keaton. Moore Went on to have a plethora of hits in the 70’s & 80’s such as ‘Falling”, “Love’s Comin’ At Ya”, Just a Little Bit More (duet with Freddie Jackson) her former background singer and later label mate, “You Stepped Into My Life”, and so many hits not to mention her signature song “Lean On Me”.

    Moore replaced Keaton in the role of Sheila. In 1970, she won a Tony Award For Best Performance Actress In A Musical for her portrayal of Lutiebelle in Purlie. She would not return to Broadway until 1978 when she appeared (as Marsinah) with Eartha Kitt (Timbuktu) but left the show after a few weeks and was replaced by Vanessa Shaw.

    Following the success of Purlie, Moore landed two big-screen film roles, released two successful albums, 1970’s I Got Love and Look What You’re Doing to the Man, and co-starred with actor Clifton Davis! She has a new live show that you must see!

    Friday, October 5, 2018 at 6 p.m. is the Down Home BBQ Blues & Soul Concert, always occurs on Friday evenings at the Historic Harriet Barber House & Grounds, 116 Barberville Loop, at Lower Richland Boulevard off Garners Ferry Road, Hopkins, SC 29061. Just 11 miles outside Columbia, SC.

    RAIN or SHINE! This years spectacular event will feature national and local recording artists and bands (live bands & shows) plus food / drink vendors from across the southeast with Pig Pickin & Oyster Roast! The Ticket prices are as follows:

    Early bird special for early concert-goers (ends September 15): $25

    Allows you admission to enter the Down Home BBQ Blues & Soul Concert 2018 and enjoy it’s provided entertainment with concert-goers. This ticket does not include any complimentary foods or drinks. There will be food vendors on the grounds. This ticket does not allow RV Docking unless you are with an RV or camper ticket purchaser.
