Man dies in camper fireFree Access

A Gaffney man is dead after he became trapped in a camper that caught fire early Friday morning.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler identified the victim as 57-year-old Bobby Wayne Carter.

According to Fowler, a passerby saw flames coming from the area near the Food Lion on East Frederick Street shortly after 5 a.m.

“When Gaffney Fire and police arrived on the scene the small aluminum camper was engulfed in flames,” Fowler said. “Once the fire was brought under control, Carter’s body was located in the rear part of the trailer.  Carter was pronounced dead at the scene.”

An autopsy will be performed Monday to assist with the coroner’s investigation.  The State Fire Marshall’s Office and State Law Enforcement Division are also investigating the fatal fire.
