The Board of Trustees of Cherokee County School District voted unanimously to “authorize the superintendent to explore and proceed with negotiations regarding the potential purchase or acquisition of real estate and other property associated with Limestone University.” This action took place at a Special Called Meeting of the Board of Trustees Thursday.
Cherokee County School District completed a comprehensive facility study in August 2022. That report is available on the district’s website under the Operations Department tab. From that study, the district developed a Capital Improvement Plan that was part of a failed referendum in November 2023. “The needs identified in the facility study still exist and the district is in the process of developing a revised Capital Improvement Plan now. Although there are many steps to be taken to determine the possibility of utilizing classroom space and other facilities on the campus of Limestone University, we believe it is prudent to explore that potential.” – Dr. Thomas White, Interim Superintendent
In addition to discussions with officials at Limestone University the school district will welcome conversations and explorations with other interested entities and the community at large. Dr. White stated, “We will definitely want to have conversations with State, County and City officials as we explore this opportunity. We are in the early stages and have not made any final decisions. Our goal is to assess whether this opportunity aligns with our educational mission and financial responsibilities. For sure, some decisions will need to be made sooner rather than later, but due diligence must be conducted. There are many requirements by the Office of School Facilities at the SC Department of Education that must be met before the school district can purchase property. We will be consulting with legal counsel each step of the way.”
As part of its fudicary responsibility, the district must balance transparency with protecting the district’s position in real estate negotiations. The district is committed to being transparent with the community. Feedback, questions and participation will be part of this process. The district will develop strategies for public participation.
“Again, its way early in the process, but I’m looking forward to a conversation with Limestone University President, Dr. Nathan Copeland, as soon as we can arrange it,” says Dr. White.
