James Sykes Jr.


 

 

James Edward Sykes Jr., of Athens, passed away on Friday, November 7, 2025, at the age of 74.

Born on November 24, 1950, James was a native of Gaffney, South Carolina. During his formative years, he was an active member of his community, serving as the Student Body President at Gaffney High School and being voted Most Popular. He later graduated from Clemson University, a testament to his dedication to education and personal growth.

James retired from a distinguished career at Georgia Power/Southern Company, where he served as the Regional Manager of the Athens office for the final five years of his employment. His leadership and commitment to his work were highly regarded by colleagues and the community alike.

James was deeply involved in his community, having served as the former President of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce and as a longtime Rotarian. His contributions to the community left a lasting impact and reflected his dedication to service and leadership.

A lifelong fan of Clemson Athletics and President of the Fort Hill Clemson Club, James had a deep love for music, particularly beach music and oldies. He enjoyed spending his spare time as a disc jockey, sharing his passion for music with others. His love for his family was paramount, and he especially cherished discovering new places to enjoy barbecue.

James is survived by his wife of 50 years, Dorothy “Dottie” Sykes, originally from Augusta. He is also survived by his children, Jennifer Crossen and her husband James of Loganville and Mikel Sykes and his wife Meghan of Athens. He leaves behind his sister, Sandra Weinstein and her husband Peter of Dacula, as well as his grandchildren, Alexandrea and Bayle Miller, and great-grandson, Jace Dolan.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, November 14, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in the Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel, located at 3195 Atlanta Hwy., Athens, Georgia, 30606.

James Edward Sykes Jr. will be remembered for his love of family, community, and music, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and joy.
